“If we lose we’re going straight to hell.”
A scream from hell heralds Dez Fatara’s (COAL CHAMBER) project, DEVILDRIVER. It’s appropriate ’cause this CD torments beautifully as a hybrid of hard rock and death metal. ‘Die (And Die Now)’ and ‘Meet The Wretched’ fall firmly into the latter category whilst ‘Swinging the Dead’, ‘I Dreamed I Died’ and ‘Knee Deep’ smell of COAL CHAMBER. Generally, Dez is less melodic, the guitars more metallish and the drums heavier and quicker.
“You’re ways are killing me”, “I wish you were dead”, and “I will bury you” are not indicative of well-written lyrics but definitely set the tone for the CD. DEVILDRIVER is rough! I can imagine a gladiator arena littered with bits of bodies and blood-wet sand. The gates would open and a muscular HATEBREED (representing good) would enter to face an evil, misshapen DEVILDRIVER. DEVILDRIVER should be the name of a weapon of war.
