Hole – Nobody’s Daughter (6/10)

hole nobodys daughter cover Hole – Nobody’s Daughter (6/10)12 years! That’s how long it’s been since the last album. HOLE is finally back. Keeping in tune with past ups and downs, there’s been Courtney Love disputes with the record label (contractual), band members (over the name) and producers (Billy Corgan and Linda Perry).  Michael Beinhorn (Fuel, Soul Asylum, Korn) took over and helps deliver a solid return by HOLE with Nobody’s Daughter. And good rock is all that matters in the end.

Undoubtedly, some tracks, including the first single, ‘Skinny Little Bitch’, don’t challenge the listener or force identification. However, outside their middle of the road approach, as well as uninspired musicianship, there’s great tracks to be experienced.

Most highs are found in the greatest honesties. ‘Honey’ opens the floodgates. Juxtaposing its sweet title is anguish. But whereas the lyrics are poetic, in ‘Pacific Coast Highway’ brutal words address her relationship with Kurt Kobain so that it becomes an ode to them both, a tragedy that hasn’t ended. When she’s singing “people like you fuck people like me”, in ‘Samantha’, it’s damn addictive.

Courtney Love says “I swear I’m too young to be this old” but i disagree ’cause i like where she’s gotten to. There’s grit in her tone. And all the best parts in HOLE’s Nobody’s Daughter belong to her.
