I was elated by John’s talent. If ever music had a purpose, it should be to elevate you to a higher level. Heavier Things is incredibly moving.
At this stage, in 2003, he hadn’t hit the big time in my home country of South Africa…yet. But he was becoming huge in the USA. His previous hit, ‘Your Body Is A Wonderland’, earned him a Grammy for best pop vocal performance. The song, ‘Bigger Than My Body’ reflects a personal sexiness, like when you just wake out of bed on a sunny morning and you know everything’s is going to be alright because you just believe and feel that you are simply the best. ‘Come Back to Bed’ oozes a romantic laziness.
Many of the songs sound similar but instead of boring they maintain a good mood. The same logic can be applied to an overall opinion of the CD because it isn’t the best thing you’ve ever heard but you’ll imagine yourself still listening to it months down the line.
The lyrics are evidence that his music’s driven by passion. He’s been criticized for mimicking Dave Matthew. So what? We need more of the like (but it’s to him and not DAVE that the surfer crowd is drawn to). He is talented and writes his songs based on personal experience. JOHN MAYER’S Heavier Things is real.

If he ever comes to South Africa and you have the chance to see him, do it! He's so incredible live. I've seen him three times and he just gets better and better. He's amazing on his records, but truly mind-blowing in his live shows.
I'll keep that in mind. Hopefully he'll make the even rarer trip to Durban.
For a long time I never knew that song “body is a wonderland” was his, until i started my first job and one of my colleagues actually had the CD. I liked the rest of the album too. Nice and chilled with heart, plus i like his voice.
‘Daughters’ is a great track too.
